Instead of one of my interesting (weird) kitchen experiment recipes today, you guys get a knitting pattern! HOORAY for my adventures in the domestic arts! (as often as they come out as strange pathetic beings with no real meaning or place in the world, I find a place in my heart to love them)
I want to get this bow tie knitting pattern down in writing before I forget. I was inspired to try it, because I recently found a really great crochet pattern for bow ties. I was shocked when I couldn’t find a good knitting one, so I set out to figure it out on my own.
This is my first pattern I’ve written down like this and only my fourth knitting project, so please bear with me! It’s a very simple pattern worked only in the garter stitch (you just knit every row), so I guess perfect for beginners like me!
I used worsted weight cotton yarn (Bernat Handicrafter’s Holidays in Mistletoe Ombre) and size 9 (5.50 mm) knitting needles. I didn’t check my gauge, sorry!
CO 11 st
Row 1: knit every st (11st)
Row 2: decrease 1 st, knit every st. (10 st)
Row 3-4: knit all (10 st)
Row 5-13: repeat rows 2-4 3 times. (7 st)
Row 14: decrease 1 st, knit every st (6 st)
Row 15-18: knit all (6 st)
Row 19: increase 1 st, knit every stitch (7 st)
Row 20-21: knit all (7 st)
Rows 22-27: repeat rows 19-21 (9 st)
Row 28: increase 1 st, knit every stitch (10 st)
Row 29-32: knit every stitch. (10 st)
Row 33: decrease 1 st, knit every stitch (9 st)
Row 34-35: knit all (9 st)
Row 36-42: repeat rows 33-35 (6 st)
Row 43: decrease 1 st, knit every st (5 st)
Row 43- ?: knit all until you get the right length (5 st)
Once you get the right length repeat the pattern backwards increase where you’re supposed to decrease and decreasing where you’re supposed to increase. (6,6,6,7,7,7,8,8,8,9,9,9,10,10,10,10,10,9,9,9,8,8,8,7,7,7,6,6,6,6,6,7,7,7,8,8,8,9,9,9,10,10,10,11) Cast off.
Voila! a bow tie! Now you need to learn how to tie one!

This pattern worked out surprisingly well. Maybe next I’ll try with smaller yarn and needles. I want to do something with some sparkly stuff, because who doesn’t love a sparkly bow tie!

How many inches should I do before I start the decrease? I have never made a bow-tie before.
The whole bow tie is 36 in (91 cm). Each bow part is 7 in (about 18 cm), and the middle part in between is 22 in (about 56 cm). Or that’s how mine came out, you should make it longer and shorter depending on the neck, but that’s about an average sized one The first decrease is in row 2, and before that is just the first row and your cast on stitches, so about 1/4 of an inch or nearly a centimeter.

Hey! I just discovered your lovely pattern and after completing the first half of the bow, I’d like to suggest making the increases and decreases in the middle of the work rather on the ends. It makes for cleaner edges. 🙂
